Where Are Your Priorities?

Being in the fitness industry for over 20 years I thought that I have heard and seen it all. Especially when it came to excuses.

Like when a client called on September 12th, 2001 and left a voicemail “Due to the tragic events happening to our country I will no longer be able continue my training.”

where

Just to be fair I thought something had happened to her family but that wasn’t the case.

I rememeber when I first moved to California in 1996. I was working at LA-Fitness in Laguna Hills before I start Chiropractic school in the fall. I was eating my lunch outside when I observed an overweight gentleman pull up in a new convertible Jag. He was very nicely dressed in a designer suit, and sported a nice Rolex watch.

He showed me a note from his doctor that said “high cholesterol, borderline diabetic, high blood pressure, needs to lose 40-50lb”.

where-nutty

When I showed him different personal training options he looked at me like I was insane.

This happened over 14 years ago and I still can’t get over how someone would rather have material possessions over health.

images

Some people have to have a wake up call to realize how important their health really is.

As I was saying I thought I have seen and heard it all til last Saturday

Many of you already know that we have started an indoor boot camp. Our Boot Camp is by far the best anywhere (I am not just saying that) below is the proof:

Every Saturday we have a free one time tryout of our boot camp. This gives everyone a chance to tryout our boot camp to see if it’s the right fit for them.

Woman in convertible car smiling

Last Saturday we had a woman pull up to the “free one time tryout” of our boot camp for the 3rd week in a row.

I never had a chance to talk to her because after finishing the class she would run out faster than Wesley Snipes at an IRS building. ๐Ÿ˜†

So I figured she is not interested……

Woman in convertible car smiling

But when I saw her pull up for her 4th “free one time tryout” I was like maybe she is interested after all.

So she calls me over as she is getting out of her $70K convertible Mercedes Benz.

She asks me “Sam, it’s a free Saturday boot camp”.

I politely answered “It’s a “one time free” tryout Saturday boot camp. It seems that you are enjoying yourself being it’s your 4th time, so you’re signing up”.

She said “I can’t I am in real estate”.

That’s when I really got confused and said “It’s only $97/month”

convertable-drive1

She then replied again “But I am in real estate” like real estate was synonymous with homeless.

I was very confused and perplexed at this time and couldn’t help but say “You drive that but you can’t afford $97 for your health and wellness.”

She then got in her car and drove away mad.

As I was driving home I had to stop and fill up my car. I was reflecting about what had happened earlier.

Here are my thoughts as I was waiting to fill up my car:

  1. $97 a month is exactly one extra gallon of extra gas for her car per day.
  2. If she legitimately can’t afford $97 then she could get a workout by going for a run at many various parks in Chino/Chino Hills. But I still can’t seem to understand driving that kind of car and not being able to afford three bucks a day I am sorry. It probably cost her over three bucks to drive to the boot camp anyway.
  3. Would she find me a new home and forgo her commission? Don’t think so
  4. I often go to Starbucks or Corner Bakery to work. I love that they have free WIFI. I always make sure to purchase something. After all they are in business like everyone else to make a living NOT provide free WIFI services.

I would love to hear your opinion on this by leaving a comment below

Ian @ 6:47 pm

Hey Sam,

I love this post! I am writting an article for the local newspaper and it is on a similar topic and is something that I encounter all the time. It is all about mind set. This lady obviously has the wrong mind set. She probably has 3 glasses of wine a night as well from a decent price bottle too. Its unfortunate but you dont want that type of person at your bootcamp anyway.

Great post. Thanks!

Andre @ 6:49 pm

Hey Sam,

I am in Roswell, Alpharetta, GA and often get the same thing. I actually started a Boot Camp last year in Alpharetta (pretty affluent area) where I had 12 Moms attend camp 3 days a week for a “Free Month Tryout”. At the end of it, all but 2 said they couldn’t affort the $97 also. All drove Mercedes, Lexus, & Audi SUV’s and two 2009 Escalade’s.

All I could say was Wow! All their day consisted of was Tennis and picking up the kids after school.

I completely feel you,

Keep it moving,

Andre’

5 years ago she would have gladly paid $997 a month as real estate was producing the best gains for everybody at that time. Maybe you should give her some of your marketing strategies to apply to her real estate job. It’s an entitlement attitude, nothing more.

Pedro @ 7:42 pm

Well Sam, you had me laughing at what you told that lady with the Mercedes Benz. But, true. Sometimes it takes a wake up call with a lot of people in order to take their health serious. Even then some still dont get it. Too bad. Also people who are able to afford to pay for a trainer dont bother to make time to take care of their health. You have to make time for yourself also.
Great article. You have a great weekend.

Becky Fox @ 7:44 pm

Sam,

Well it’s good to know it’s not just people here in TN! I have that happen all the time too…someone can’t afford bootcamp yet they can go to fancy steakhouses, go to the beauty salon and have all sorts of stuff done, have luxury cars like this woman, or buy lattes every morning on their way to work, etc…; however, they can’t afford bootcamp YET still want to complain how fat and out of shape they are?! Amazing!!

Cara Eckerman @ 7:44 pm

I saw this on Bedros blog too and it reminded me of a situation last week! Had a lady come for our FREE week trial class , made all five days.. Raved about me to my face and on Facebook THEN on her LAST day tells me my program is “too expensive” as she had within the Past year been on HCG and when that didn’t work went and got lap band, wait for it……. IN MEXICO!!!!! …., AY AY AY!! Behind the flaky client is someone else who will see the true value in what you offer! Sam your a true professional who wants to bring health and fitness into peoples lives it’s frustrating when crap like that goes down but let her be someone elses problem besides she probably has that big car payment each month ๐Ÿ˜‰ thanks for all your inspirstion!!

Christian @ 7:57 pm

I know what you mean. I get so frustrated with people who try to take advantage of a free trial service.
I used to give 2 week trials for people who might be interested in my fitness program. For the most part the people who were serious about achieving their fitness goals would actually tell me after the first workout that they want to sign up. I can’t stand the people that would wait to the very last day of their 2 week trial to tell me that they weren’t interested.
My question to them would be, “If you weren’t interested why did you continue with the 2 week trial?” “If you knew you weren’t interested from the beginning why did you take advantage of my service?” “Why did you go out of your way to waste my time?”
I think it’s really tacky when someone takes advantage of a small business owner that is trying to pay their bills and feed their family. Don’t these people realize that we have to run a business and provide for our family.
I can’t stand these kinds of people that claim to be broke but yet they go on vacations all the time, drive expensive cars, flash their jewelry around, and eat out at 5 star restaurants all the time.
Sorry to go on a rant but these kinds of people are terrible human beings and wish their was a better way to identify them before we service them.
You should have a picture id of this woman and hang it up at the front door to notify the front desk to never let her in. Maybe make a most wanted wall of bad customers that can never do business with you.

Erick Salgado @ 7:58 pm

I agree. When I was in high school I worked after school at a personal training studio just so I could participate in the boot camps. Oh I was paying $100 in addition also. $97 a month is a GREAT DEAL! If she can not see what a great deal the camp is and doesn’t think her health is worth $97 a month, keep her out.

Shirin Salamat @ 8:23 pm

Great article. When are you opening up a gym in the Valley ??

Jeremy Johnson @ 8:37 pm

She needs to stop wasting her and your time. She’s not commited, dedicated and most likely looks at being in shape as a fashion accessory. She’s a
WEB, why even bother… Live and let die bro.

Eric Peacock @ 9:39 pm

Sam, you missed a perfect opportunity to suggest she try to write off the fees as a business expense, or more likely a medical necessity expense if she can get her doctor to cooperate and state she is obese.

In Information Letter 2002-0077, the IRS says that since it now recognizes obesity as a disease, health club membership fees, which have been incurred primarily for the purpose of preventing or alleviating obesity, may be deductible as a medical expense under Section 213.

Dr. Saman @ 9:45 pm

@Ian: I am glad I am not the only one speaking on the topic.

@Andre: Damn, happened to you too. That’s a shame. What the hell going on.

@Chris: You are right it’s an entitlement attitude. I wish I could go to businesses and just feel entitled to use their services for free. I just don’t have that in me.

@Pedro: Thanks for laughing but I just kept it real. Most people think about it and talk about it behind closed doors. NOT ME. You have a great weekend as well.

@Becky: So funny you say that. I visited TN last year and couldn’t find healthy food for the life of me. I mean they put oil on grilled chicken. What a beautiful state. I guess looking at all the comments it happens everywhere.

@Cara: That’s a damn shame. HCG, LAP band in MEXICO but can’t afford boot camp? It seems like she would rather die than exercise.

@Christian: You said it better than I could. I am so proud of you I heard you have a waiting list for people to train with you. Thanks for commenting.

@Erick: Some people just don’t get it. Rather have material things than their health. I few weeks ago I met Steve Wynn at the Encore Beach. As rich as he was he couldn’t see(he lost his vision). Does God have to take something away for us to realize how valuable it is?
If you lose money you can always make it back. Your health is a different story.

@Shirin: Thank you. I have my hands full here. These days all I want to do is spend time with my little girl..

@Jeremy: LOVE WEB: WHY EVEN BOTHER. lol I am going to use this one. Thanks.

Kevin @ 10:03 pm

Funny Thing … I am in Real Estate too! It is just my personal opinion Sam, you are taking this way too seriously and way too personally … she is the one that is trying to take advantage of the situation … which some people do. This is a business and there are the different personalities that we must deal with on a daily basis, I understand the Gym business as I have several World Gym operators that I do their commercial leases and spend a fair amount of time in the gym and understand a little on how they work. I think that “Service” is the key, keep your mind focused on that to your paying customers and don’t let your mind be consumed with the BS of one person, Realtor or not, consume so much of your Natural Energy that could have been given to your customers or family! Thick skinned to the non-payers my friend! Think of all the great things you could have done for your other customers during the down time on this article! You are a good person … stay focused and when something like this happens, make the decision as you did to confront her and feel good about it! Can’t win em all! If it still keep circulating in your brain, say out loud “NEXT” and mentally move on the the next topic. It really works! Go Get Em!

Dr. Saman @ 10:21 pm

@Kevin: My mind is always focused on my customers. That’s why I am the number one privately owned personal training company in California. I have over seven thousand subscribers and I educate and ENTERTAIN them through my blog. They appreciate the fact that they get to know me on a personal level. There are plenty of weight loss articles out there but my blog is more than that it’s a hub to bring my friends, clients and subscribers closer together. I love connecting with my subscribers in a real way. So as you can see this is a “service” that my clients enjoy.
Thank you for reading the blog and commenting I truly mean that.

Neff @ 10:11 pm

Sam,
It is unfortunate that, it is a fact of life that there are people in the world who are simply … well … “takers”, if you give them a hand, they will take your whole arm and the shirt off your back, the keys to your car, and move in to your house while simultaneously throwing you out, I learned this while dealing with people for over 20 years, it does not shock me. It was the right decision to aproach her and call her out, you lost nothing, if anything you gained more out of it.

Best Regards
Neff

Hristo @ 1:56 am

It is pretty amazing how people like her never find money for the most important thing in their lives and and others that make 5 times less than her find it. Why? She is not in the right mindset. She is still struggling finding the value of her well being.
One part of me says: WOW, how could there be such people, is this really true? But as a fitness professional and a big fan and learning from health and wellness wizards like you Sam I have seen those people. And you cant do much about them, they are not there yet, you cant convince them. They need to either experience something extreme in a negative way to shake them a little, or to allow someone like you to reprogram them from the core while being very open minded…otherwise they are hopeless.

The world is amazing with all kinds of people:)

Dale @ 4:41 am

Sam,
That is a great story. I live in Boca Raton, FL and people here are all just like that. They storm into my studio as they get out of FERRARI (no joke) and first thing they ask is “how much”. That’s before they even know what I do or if I can help them.

I gave up having free one time classes because nobody in my city ever signed up. After I started charging $100 for a consultation and 15 min workout I got people interested. Crazy

Dennis @ 5:48 am

I am a realtor who drives a Jag but unlike others who have posted, I have attended a for real boot camp as a retired Soldier of 20 years. There I learned that push ups, sit ups, and a 2 mile run 3 or 4 days per week will save you 97 dollars per week. Who knows, the lady you wrote about has a heavy schedule. I hav to quit me golf league because I could not be held to the same schedule week in and week out. Realtors are on call professionals. Her reluctance to join your boot camp may have nothing to do with your fee of 97 dollars per month. In real estate, the job is never really done. When you make a sale, you’re unemployed until you find the next sale and in this market, that isn’t always easy. I say if one wants Boot Camp, join the US Army.

Dr. Saman @ 7:27 am

@Dennis: If you read the post it’s $97/month not week. And again if you read the post it was the price she objected to. If you join the Army its not just boot camp you are joining it’s many other duties associated with being in the Army. Our Army is not designed to train mom’s and dad’s to get in shape and then go sell houses. I command you for being a retired soldier BUT somehow you read the wrong post or you were under the influence since you wrote $97/week in one area and $97/month in another area of your post. Army is for soldiers not for civilians. YOU SHOULD KNOW THAT.

Craig @ 7:14 am

Hey Bro,

I have to say you had me laughing again! It is unfortunate that people feel it is ok to take advantage like that and it is AWESOME that you called her out on it! I know since we opened our doors almost 2 years ago we have come across so people just like that…

One that comes to mind was the lady that did our Train for 2 Weeks for $2! She came to class EVERYDAY…tried to suck every bit of info out of us and talked about how they spent all weekend on their boat and about this vacation or the other! When her last day of the two weeks was up she had the balls to ask me to do structure class around exercises she could remember, perform at home, and that she didn’t need someone to tell her what to do! Not too mention she asked me to write it out for her…

Needless to say I was a smartass and continued on teaching exactly what I wanted to that day…this world is full of all sorts of bloodsuckers! I think it will always be this way and it is sad that people feel it is acceptable to take advantage!

Awesome post and talk to you soon
Craig

Julie @ 7:33 am

I know for me it took a long time to understand the value that personal training gives. After all, I was a 3 sport athlete in HS, a dancer a runner….I know how to work out…. but do I know how to work out to get to my goals? No. I had to remember that as an athlete in HS, I had a coach. Someone who could get me from point A to point Z – the goal. Someone to push me.

Sounds is a matter of respect and realizing that someone can help you – personally – and being open to that help. Without knowing her, it’s hard to say, but my guess would be that she either doesn’t want to “commit” or she doesn’t have a respect for your profession. After all, you are giving it for “free” right? charge a low $10 first class try-it fee and the respect would go up –

Dr. Saman @ 7:38 am

I couldn’t agree with you more. I thought one time free trial was obvious.

Stephanie @ 8:40 am

Sam you are totally right! It’s basic economics if nothing else..TINSTAFL(There Is No Such Thing As a Free Lunch)
As a business owner I can appreciate someone charging for a good service rendered! Keep up the good work!

Giovanni Cogua @ 8:42 am

Well Sam:
I have no long time ago A MAN with a $10.000 Rolex on his hand that say not have $47 for his Daughter swimming lessons. So I’m not surprised.

Jim Wray @ 10:14 am

Sam, I can certainly agree, the boot camp you’re offering is a sweet deal. I have priced other fitness centers that had it, and not including general membership it was $100+.

Knowing what I know of Fitness Concepts, the value of boot camp, the personal trainers, the nutritionist, and overall atmosphere it really is a great deal. The only way you can get that attention you deliver at Fitness Concepts is to pay quite a bit more and then pray that the trainers or the gym that you do choose will show the same love, the commitment, and sometimes the ball crackin’ attitude that we all need to get our tails in gear.

As far priorities, I know that I can empathize with the Jaguar-driving exec or the Real Estate guru, but as I get older I am realizing it’s great to have all those material enjoyments. However, if my “fitness challenged” butt can’t get off the couch, move my schedule around, or just talk to you and the Fitness Concept gurus, then there is no 100% garantee that I can enjoy those things. Cause believe me driving a Jag would be better done if my tummy didn’t hit the wheel, I wasn’t crammed into the seat, or the driver’s seat was pushed back to the farthest rung back just to be halfway comfortable.

Totally my opinion and I am bias, but when you have fillet minon, its tough going back to chuck.

Keep Pluggin’ Sam

Jim Wray

Anna Lara @ 10:32 am

Sam I had to chime! I work in an industry in where clients come in everyday questioning a charge or expect a free service. But yet they want or need the service… for FREE!!! And it’s a service they benefit from it otherwise why engage in the service/product if you are not willing to pay for services rendered. My response to my clients in a very cordial and sympathetic way is to reply Mr. Customer we are run a business in where we provide excellent and competitive services with the award winning customer service and for that we feel that fees associated with those services are justifiable. At the end of the day we are not a Non-profit organization!! In some cases I make concessions and some cases in where they have already had their freebie, then I decline. What’s funny is when it’s free people still complain… Go figure!!

Tim Flores @ 11:45 am

Reading the first few comments in this blog …That is exactly “mindset”……i look at things that will benefit me or that appeal to me in a way of …..ok how can I afford this (positive, as the glass is half full)….This lady obviously looks at things oh, I can’t afford this!!! and that is that (negative, as the glass is half empty) too bad ๐Ÿ™ ..
Everything is energy…everything what kind do you put out….

I help people with this very concept ” to rise out of the victim mentality, and rise into being the victor of your reality”!!!

My business is in the health and wellness just as yours is…I provide a medical water called “kangen water” I give this to people free for 30 days..this water help balance your bodies ph from acidic to alkaline because its high alkaline….being in this acidic society we all need this medical grade water (bottle water drinkers need to do your homework..most is acidic)…
I have a store that we give this water free to people for 3 years..over 3200 people have come to us and the stories are amazing…wow….
getting back to the point of helping people with their mindset if it help them gain a better “quality of life how can you NOT afford this”…..change ur thinking………you will us and your family will thank you!!!
ENJOY LIFE BY DOING EVERYTHING YOU CAN TO BE HEALTHY< ENJOY “QUALITY OF LIFE”!!! cheers!!

Josh @ 12:39 pm

Sam,
This blog post was hilarious, and I totally agree with ya! Keep up the great work!

Marcie @ 3:40 pm

Great story Sam,
All I can say is you give a foot and they want a mile, but then again this may be the reason she drives that car………..she probably gets all kinds of FREEBIES therefore never spends her own money!

Gloria Charles @ 4:00 pm

Sam, you’ve been in business long enough to know, some people are always looking for something for nothing. It’s sounds to me like she suffered like so many others, from a sense of entitlement. Or she could be like the person that goes to an upscale restaurant and then claims there was hair in the food so they don’t have to pay. Just looking for something for free. Keep writing I find your blogs comical. Having worked in public service and retail, people never fail to amaze me.

Real estate is only synonymous with homeless if you’re not in the top 50% of real estate professionals… but back to the fitness discussion…

I like the idea of having a training coach (i.e. bootcamp instructor).

$97/mo. is more than reasonable. Go DO IT!

P.S. Faster than Wesley Snipes out of an IRS building… LMAO!

Dr. Saman @ 11:16 pm

@Chino Hills Short Sale Agent: I agree with the top 50% comment. And I am glad you liked the Wesley Snipes analogy.

@Gloria: I am glad you find me funny. Some love me while others hate me but everyone respects me for saying what’s on my mind.

@Marcie: You probably right. Some people are just takers. They take and take and take. Never give anything.

@Josh: Thanks for reading. Glad you found it humorous.

@Tim: I agree with Mindset. I also command you for helping people BUT no offense it sounds like another Multilevel Marketing (MLM).

@Jim: Thank you for the nice compliments. I TOTALLY appreciate you. Again a big thank you.

@Anna: I talked to a friend of mine (a very, very successful businessman) he told me that the lower a price point of a service the higher the hassle factor. I am finding that to be very true.

@Giovanni: Are you serious. One thing you don’t want to save your own life but another thing if you don’t want to save your child’s life. That’s a DAMN SHAME. I will sell everything off, get a second and a third job to make sure my princess is safe. Wow that’s worse than this situation here. Children are EVERYTHING.

@Stephanie: I like TINSTAFL
