The Best Ways to Boost Your Metabolism

Boosting your metabolism is the goal for any weight watcher. If you are hoping to shed a few pounds, getting your metabolism to burn calories faster makes the job easier to manage. However, that is easier said than done in most cases. Your success depends on a variety of factors. For example, it is natural that men burn calories faster than women do, even when a man is resting. Once you hit the magic age of 40, your metabolism slows down – further making it hard to lose weight. You may not feel you have many options to boost your metabolism then, but in fact, you do.

Building Muscle

One of the best ways to push your metabolism numbers higher is to build muscle. Even when you do nothing, your body is burning calories. However, if you have more muscle mass (and that does not necessarily mean bulky muscles) your body will burn more calories even as you relax. That is because each muscle needs six calories a day just to support it. Keep in mind that each pound of fat burns only two calories per day. This difference adds up over time and makes a significant difference in your body’s makeup.

Aerobic Exercise Kicks It Into Gear

For those who wish to push harder and faster, consider aerobic exercise. It does not build your muscles but it does a high intensity workout that will increase your metabolic rate – the rate at which your body burns through calories. The only catch here is that you do have to push your body harder to get to that high intensity workout level.

Give Your Body Fuel

Perhaps one of the most important ways to get your body moving in the right direction is not to deprive it of what it needs most – water. In order to process calories, the body needs calories. Even if you are mildly dehydrated and you are not feeling it, your metabolism will slow down. According to some experts, if you drink eight or more glasses of water each day, your body will burn more calories. Try to drink a glass of water, or you can substitute with any unsweetened fluid, right before your meals or snacks.

Another trick is to keep those drinks cold. Studies show that your body will burn more calories during the digestion process if you are drinking ice-cold beverages. In fact, because the water is cold, you will burn an extra ten calories each day, if you are drinking five to six glasses. That does not seem like a lot, but it can help you to shed a pound each year.

You want to burn calories faster because it means that your body has to do less to achieve the same result. These tips are surefire ways to get your metabolism working at its highest level, right from the start of your day. It does not have to be difficult to achieve these results, but it does have to be an intense workout if you want to push your metabolism to do more throughout the day.
