Upland Personal Trainer Answers A Common Question

Question:

Hi Dr. Sam,

I am emailing you because I am concerned with my weigh in today.

Here were my past weigh in results:

k-step-scale-weight-foot

1) 7/2/10: This was my first weigh in. I was 144lbs and had 29% body fat.
2) 7/9/10: This was my second weigh in. I was 144lbs and had 27.7% body fat. (same weight, but lost body fat) GREAT JOB
3) 7/16/10: Today was my third weigh in. I was 141.6lbs and had 31% body fat. (lost weight, but gained body fat)

I am concerned because I felt like I was making progress. My diet has been really good so far. I have been following your recommendations for nutrition. I am confused as to why I gained so much body fat in one week. My diet did not change from last week. The only difference this week was that I had the flu since Monday evening. My last workout with Alejandra was Monday morning. I had to cancel our session for today due to my illness. I also had to cancel my Turbo Kickboxing class this week. So, could the body fat increase be due to the fact that I miss two workouts? I find that hard to believe since I have been eating right (actually less than usual due to my flu). I just got really discouraged this morning to find out that I gained so much body fat in a week. What did I do wrong? Do you have any recommendations? I am really please with my progress thus far, and I would love to see more great results. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

KRISTINE YOUR BODY FAT HAS NOT INCREASED BECAUSE YOU MISSED 2 WORKOUTS!!!! LOL. YOU SEE THE ELECTRICAL IMPEDANCE BODY FAT TEST ACTUALLY TESTS WATER IN YOUR MUSCLES TO CALCULATE BODY FAT. SO WHEN YOU ARE DEHYDRATED BECAUSE YOU ARE SICK YOU HAVE LESS WATER, WHICH IT FALSELY MAKES THE MACHINE THINK THAT YOU HAVE LESS MUSCLE THEREFORE MORE BODY FAT.

ONLY THING YOU SHOULD DO IS REST REHYDRATE YOUR BODY AND STAY AWAY FROM THE HEAT TODAY. I ALSO ENCOURAGE YOU TO TAKE A GOOD MULTIVITAMIN MINERAL SUPPLEMENT LIKE PROGRADE AND DRINK GATORADE ZERO(THE ONE WITHOUT CALORIES)

KRISTINE GET WELL AND DON’T WORRY YOU WILL NEVER GAIN THAT MUCH FAT IN A WEEK. YOU ARE JUST DEHYDRATED AS YOU CAN SEE BY YOUR SUDDEN WEIGHT REDUCTION.
