The numbers tell a story we cannot ignore. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, in the United States, individuals age 12 or older experienced an estimated 222,000 rapes or sexual assaults in 2008. Research indicates that, over the course of their lifetimes, 18 percent of women in this country are raped.
How often does sexual assault occur?
In 2007, there were 248,300 victims of rape, attempted rape, or sexual assault. (These figures do not include victims 12 years old or younger.)
A woman that I work with was mugged in a parking lot in Los Angeles a few weeks before Christmas last year. As she was leaving the parking lot to go to the office, a man walked up to her and demanded that she give him her car keys. When she refused to comply, the man grabbed her by the arm and tried to pry the keys out of her hand. She lost her balance and ended up on the ground. Fortunately for her, there was an ambulance passing by with the lights and sirens on which scared her attacker. He ran from the scene and to her surprise, she saw another man running with him. She realized at that time that there were two men, not just her attacker.
