How To Get More Energy So That You Can Keep Up With Your Kids
I always considered myself a very energetic person.
All my life I managed to workout everyday, work 8-12 hours per day which includes doing nutrition consultations, phone consultations, writing blog posts like this one, public speaking, continuing my education, and everything else that needs to be done to run a successful business.
Today I do all of the above PLUS I have an active 1 year old princess that takes after her great grandmother who is always on the go.
Since I am not getting any younger I need to pay attention to some “basic” principles to be able to keep up with this “new creation” who does not seem to ever run out of energy.
Energy
But what is energy?
According to physicists, it’s the capacity to do more “work.”
When you are charged with energy at the office you knock off that “to-do” list in a fraction of the time.
Boosting mental *and* physical energy is key.
Here’s one way to get more that you probably “know” but that you are likely neglecting.
Here it is, but keep reading – there’s more to it than you may realize:
*Get more sleep*
According to Web MD Most adults need 7 to 8 hours of sleep a night.
What does “need” mean?
Consider this:
Did you know seventeen hours of sustained wakefulness leads to a decrease in performance equivalent to a blood alcohol-level of 0.05%?
That’s the legal blood alcohol limit for driving in many countries.
So, getting 5 hours of sleep a night (as many of us do far too often) is like being drunk.
And if you don’t take a cat nap, chances are, you’re at 0.05 before you hit the sack.
Want proof more sleep could even save your life?
The extra-hour of sleep received when clocks are put back at the start of daylight in Canada has been found to coincide with a dramatic fall in the number of road accidents.
Are you beginning to see how serious this is?
Obviously, getting more sleep adds up to more energy.
(Your parents were right.)
Just by getting a healthy 7 or 8 hours of sleep tonight will allow you to experience a radical shift in your productivity tomorrow.
Here are some other ways to “hack” your energy levels tomorrow morning after you get a full night sleep tonight:
1. Spring out of bed quickly (lying around will keep you tired all day)
2. Drink at least 8 ounces of water immediately and stay hydrated (dehydration causes fatigue)
3. Eat a high protein meal (the amino acids in protein will help your brain create neurotransmitters to boost your brain power)
These may sound like small changes, but the effects they can have on your life are enormous.
If you have trouble finding enough energy to get the job done, if you feel like your brain is in a fog then try some of the strategies I outlined above and you will discover an increase in your energy.

With more energy, you can tackle more each day … and get more enjoyment after the work day is done.

Sam, ok, I do get about 7-9 hours of sleep a night, drink lots of water throughout the day and eat a high protein meal (most of the time) but I am still worn out mid-day, UGH! Does “springing” out of bed really make the different because I sure don’t do that, haha.

Amber,
I have the same problem. If your job allows, take a 15min break and go for a walk around the building or even a drive to the local grocery store where you can walk around (the cold air will wake you right up) you’ll get the blood flowing and be back to normal
Also, I had a huge problem getting out of bed. Try setting your alarm clock across the room so you have to get out of bed to shut it off. I also usually have a glass of water next to my bed for when I wake up (may sound grosse to you, but doesn’t bother me) hope this helps!

A couple of jumping jacks, or running, jumping in one place and a glass of cold water totally helps to pick me up!
